I got asked today why we use another company (Fasthosts) to host the websites that we build rather than host them ourselves? The answer is simple - because we'd be rubbish at it! We're great at designing and building websites that work for our clients, but we're not specialists in data centres, we could not provide 24/7 technical support, and without spending hundreds of thousands of pounds we could not guarantee 99.9% uptime. For decades now big corporations have been doing what's known as 'outsourcing'. This is where you get another company to look after non-core elements of your business because they can do it better and cheaper than you could, resulting in increased profitability and improved customer satisfaction - why wouldn't you? If I thought we could host a customer's website better than Fasthosts then I would, but I'm a realist and I want to be able to provide the best service possible for my customers, so we outsource it.

We could be less honest about this though and do the same as many other web design companies out there and become a 'reseller'. This basically means we'll pretend to provide you with web hosting services, but actually we'll be buying it off another company, sticking our logo on the control panel and selling it onto you at a premium, but that's just not the kind of business I want to run.

We're great at designing and building websites, so we focus on that and outsource the rest - they can do it better and cheaper than us anyway.
